The Analog Motorola DynaTAC 8000X Advanced Mobile Phone System mobile phone was unveiled in 1983. The "brick" weighed about 2 lbs. It sold for $3,995 in 1984 when customers lined up in droves to purchase one. On one charge, you got a half-hour of talk time.

Guion Bluford became the first African-American to travel in space in 1983, on board the space shuttle Challenger, and three later missions.

Vanessa Williams became the first African-American woman to be crowned Miss America in September 1983, Her title was stripped from her less than a year later when Penthouse magazine released nude photos of her taken years before the pageant. Ms. Williams had the last laugh though as she went on with a hugely successful singing and acting career.

In November 1983, President Reagan signed legislation that made the third Monday in January a national holiday commemorating Dr. Martin Luther King's birthday. This is the only federal holiday commemorating an African-American.

Star Wars Episode VI: Return of the Jedi had the highest weekend debut and was the highest grossing film of 1983.

Terms of Endearment practically swept the Academy Awards in 1983. The film won Best Picture, Best Director (James L. Brooks), Best Actress (Shirley MacClaine), and Best Supporting Actor (Jack Nicholson). It also won two Golden Globes for Best Picture and Best Actress

Tootsie was nominated for ten Academy Awards. Jessica Lange was the only winner for Best Actress in a Supporting Role.
